Do Men Get Better Car Deals? Brent Halvorson of High Gear Media asked this question. My wife sent it to me via Yahoo Autos. So there's this question staring at me from my inbox. Hmmm? My initial thought was, I guess you need to look at who specifically is giving the car deal to know the answer to that.

Interesting and thought provoking? Well being in the business myself, I thought, what a great time to comment on it and how nice will it be for you to get it straight from the source!

Let me just say this. First and foremost, a deal is a deal is a deal. I really don't care how many "Y" chromosomes you have or don't have. I'm more concerned with whether or not you like what I'm trying to sell you and if you like it enough to buy it. Ironically, more women in this day and age can and do buy without their husbands being present. The old, "I need to talk to my spouse" routine is far more prevalent with the fella's then the ladies.

Now this is just me. I would assume that in my industry there will be a few ding-dongs who think they can still pull a fast one on a lady because she's female. I can also assume that kind of ignorance still exists in most industries to some extent. However, the Internet and Internet Car Shopping should eliminate any gender gap that may exist in the Car Business.

This article then goes on to cite a study from CarWoo where 65% of the dealers they looked at (shopped online) had a price quote difference of under $500. Usually the gap in price between men and women was about $100. 20% of the group surveyed was over by $500. 20% means 1 in 5. Same brand.

Solution: If you follow the standard protocol and secure quotes from at least 3 different dealers for the same make and model, your gender bias will virtually be eliminated.

Edmunds.com has also done a great deal of research in this area as well and found that there can be a different level of treatment and behavior towards women.

My advice for the ladies (which can also be applied to men shopping too) is to remove gender from the equation. Before you are a man or a woman, you are a buyer and a potential client of this dealership. Do your homework first. Find the right car for you and your budget. When you go test drive it, keep in mind you're also shopping for a dealership and a salesperson. Don't reward bad or apathetic service by buying something. You are entitled to take your business elsewhere should you choose. When you negotiate your best deal, keep in mind that you too are selling something. You're selling yourself and why you should get a better deal. With as much as you expect friendly, courteous service, when you practice the Golden Rule, getting a better deal will be easy. When you have rapport with your salesperson everything works better. Especially the money.

The article concludes with a lesson for salespeople and buyers alike. They encourage us to realize that people in general are fundamentally good. "If you walk into a negotiation with the belief the dealer [or customer, if your the dealer] is biased you'll find something (truthful or not) to substantiate that belief and that will poison a negotiation."

2011 Sierra Denali 3500 at Keyes Woodland Hills GMC

Truck Trend is calling this bad boy "Tough Lux". It tows 21,000 pounds, Hauls over 5200 and can go from 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds. And it can do it all in style.

With this 3500 Denali, GM is looking to take on the King Ranch and as Allyson Harwood puts it with Good Looks and Big Brawn!

If you take a look at the November/December Issue of Truck Trend, you'll find a very nice article and solid review of the 3500 Denali and gives a strong testament to the GMC Sierra's HD line being able to give the boys over at Ford a good run for their money!

Some of my favorite parts from the article was how impressed they were with the performance and power.

"It reached 60 mph in 7.7 seconds and went through the quarter mile in 16 seconds flat at 85.5 mph. It weighs 8100 pounds, and it's 0-to-60 is comparable with those of a Dodge Challenger (V-6 powered), Mazda3, or Acura TSX. And last time we checked, none of those cars could tow 21,100 pounds."

Keyes Woodland Hills GM hits the L.A. Auto Show

Recently paid a visit to the Los Angeles Auto Show. If you stop by the dealership, we have coupons for a discount on tickets if you decide to go.

There were some pretty amazing vehicles on display from all the manufacturers, but lets take a look at what Buick, GMC and Cadillac featured. These are Concept Cars and Coming Soons...

For Buick was the Regal GS. This bad boy is coming soon with a 2.0L Ecotech engine with a Turbo that will hit 255 horses and 295 on the torque! NICE! 0-60 in under 7 seconds. Those of in Los Angeles who need to dodge traffic and hop on a freeway right quick will appreciate the performance aspect of the GS. A Whole lotta kick wrapped up in a tight little package! They also beefed up the front grill to enhance the European Sport Sedan design and these wheels are very nice. What was most impressive for me was the effortless blend of performance, sport and luxury. Clearly a sign of things to come for Buick as in begins to remake a name for itself in the Luxury car segment.

GMC showed the Granit. This is going to be a cool little city SUV that will take the concept of Urban Utility Vehicle and launch it into the stratosphere! 1.4L Turbo engine, suicide doors, room for a bike in the front seat, seating configurations that would make a Transformer jealous and did I mention suicide doors? How cool is that! I was quite impressed with the space inside. Like the Terrain, the Granit will be small but have a tom of volume. The fuel economy is projected to be at 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The word on the street is this may hit showrooms in as soon as 2012 or early 2013. Definately something to look forward to and will also look forward to the Mini Cooper getting a good solid run for it's money.

Cadillac displayed their Urban Luxury Concept. So speaking of Urban... And speaking of giving the Mini another reason to freak out, take a look at this sucker! Lambo-style doors, easy seating and room for 4. As a concept car, the designers have a free range of imagination to plug into their unique ideas as to what the future will hold for an Urban Luxury car. The concept for the powertrain is a hybrid propulsion system that will have a 1.0L three-cylinder engine that should be getting anywhere from 56 mpg in the city and 65 mpg on the highway. Not to shabby at all!

The L.A. Auto Show had a lot of really nice concepts on display and a good collection of vehicles coming very soon. To note, the Chevy Volt and Camero convertable were there to tease performance and evnironmentally conscious drivers alike.

Outside of the GM world was a nice display from Mazda. Frankly, I was rather taken aback by this car and was reminded of the feeling that I got the first time I saw the Enclave and LaCrosse. "That's a Buick?" I thought! Well this time it was, 'that's a Mazda?' So nice work Mazda designers! The Jaguar C-X75 also had me rubbernecking to the point of strain. That came out quite nice. Saab made a good showing with touches of retro Saab design blending with current styles, It's nice to see that Saab pulled though in the end.

Of particular interest was the showing of even more environmently friendy vehicles coming to market and a real emphasis on not only high MPG number but getting it in a way that is either elegant, luxurious, or sporty and fun. Clearly a lot to look forward to as the Autootive Industry continues its evolution.

New NHTSA Test Results Released

Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC Cadillac would like to be the first to let you know that...

The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration went and changed their testing making it harder to hit the prized 5-Star mark.

The Good News is that they ran the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia through a barrage of test and both The GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave came out with the full 5-Star rating. The Chevrolet Traverse also recieved the same 5-Stars.

Unfortunately, for the Buick Lucerne, it was only 3-Stars due to the fact that it scored low on side impact but still managed 5-stars on rollover and frontal impact.

"The beautiful Warner Center here in the West Valley just got a little safer thanks to the LAPD's Mounted Unit. The Warner Center is known for it upscale shopping and well groomed business offices. Unfortunately at times the bad guys catch on to that fact too and begin to scour the area looking for an easy target. After a recent upturn in auto break-ins, the Mounted officers have taken to patrolling the area.

The LAPD has had various mounted patrols for a number of years and most of it was handled by officers that volunteered their own horses to the cause. In the late 1980's the Mounted unit joined as a permanent full time addition to the department as part of the famed Metropolitan Division and became the "E" Platoon. Now all the horses and tack are provided by the City of Los Angeles.

The facts show that when the Mounted Units are seen patrolling an area, the crime takes a sudden downturn. But what can you do to help avoid becoming a victim? First off, try to pick a well lighted area when parking at night. Next, be sure to keep small personal electronic devices out of sight and not on the console or seat. As the holiday season approaches, be sure not to keep too many packages and presents in the car. When you are on a shopping spree be sure to keep items covered or in the trunk. Be on the watch for cars following you home from the stores or malls and if you believe that you are being followed don't drive to your house. A little awareness goes a long way in keeping you from becoming a victim."

Keyes Woodland Hills Cadillac recently worked with The Boys and Girls Club of the West Valley as a key sponsor helping with their fourth annual Mile of Quarters. The fund raising event was held at the Westfield Topanga and Promenade mall on Saturday September 11th.

In a press release, from the Club, Gary Thoman, chairman of the youth services said, "September 11 is also a National Day of Service. It is an extension of Senator Edward Kennedy's Serve America Act that President Obama signed in April, 2009. The day is set aside to do a good deed or donate to a charity. Parents and grandparents can make it a memorable way of teaching children about the value of helping others in their community while commemorating the Day of Service." Continued Thomas, “This is not a major fundraising event for large donors; this is a free event for the community. Families can participate for as little as $3.25 for one foot of quarters.”

The Mile of Quarters event allows community members to contribute quarters to be laid out for one mile through the Topanga Mall. The donations will help support the Club's programs for needy youths.

Buick In The News Leading the Turnaround

In a recent article from ABCnews.com, Richard Davies reports on the big U-turn from Buick and GM.

Let's take a look:

"Not long ago Buicks were a symbol of what was wrong with Detroit, and the stumbling U.S. auto industry.

Today, Buick has made a U-turn and is on the fast track. After more than two decades of falling sales and a stale image, the 'senior citizen's car' has quietly been re-tooled with new designs and a more aggressive advertising campaign. General Motors executives sound excited, claiming Buick is the fastest growing brand in America.

Sales of the Enclave, LaCrosse and Regal models have more than doubled in the past year. Buick sold 7,047 Lacrosse in July, five times the level of July, 2009. Advertising Age reports Buick is the best selling GM brand in China, the world's biggest market for new cars.

Customer satisfaction has also improved. A new survey by the American Customer Satisfaction Index, an Ann Arbor, Mich. based review of car consumers, shows Buick is now in second place with a satisfaction reading of 88% - just one point behind the top rated Lincoln –Mercury nameplate.

At current rates, GM will sell more than 148,000 Buicks this year, more far more than last year's dismal 102,306 total. It would also be a gain compared to 137,197 in 2008.

Auto industry analysts say today's Buick is much more up-to-date than it was a few years ago, and competitive with rival brands.

Autoguide.com says the average age of a Buick buyer has dropped from 64 to 61-years-old in the past 18 months. That's still relatively old, but for GM, it's a turn in the right direction.

Switch on the radio and you will hear a different kind of marketing in company commercials. Ryan Willard speaks about "falling in love" with the sporty design and chrome trim of the new Buick Lacrosse. Enclave owner Denise Melendez compares her Buick Enclave with the popular Ford Edge and Focus. The aim is to go younger and go after the competition."

How to Manage the Dome Light

Do you ever get thrown for a loop by the most simple of tasks? Sometimes, or if you're like me, frequently, it's the little things that can tie you up. Take the "dome light" functions in the GMC Acadia, Yukon, Buick Enclave and a few others. This feature can be found in most GMC cars, trucks and SUV's and has been know to cause minor confusion and frustration for more than a fair share of happy owners.

The Dome Lights normally come on when the door is opened and shut off when they close. You can also override the dome light and adjust the brightness of the lights and guages by turning the knob in the center.

2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe at Keyes Cadillac in Woodland Hills

On Tuesday, representatives from Cadillac came by with two Cadillac CTS coupes for us to see. Available in showrooms towards the end of summer, the CTS Coupe is sure to be a big hit with Cadillac drivers and we can expect to see a few new faces coming over from some of the European and Japanese brands as well.

In a blog post on AutoBlog.com, Jonny Leiberman sings his praises towards the in coming CTS Coupe, which is no small feet considering Leiberman states that next the Solstice, GM hasn't done much design wise since 1977! So, for a moan with that paradigm to come out and express ooohs and ahhs for the CTS Coupe, now, that's saying something!

Let's take a look at what else Leiberman had to say...

"It's difficult to describe just how striking the CTS Coupe is in the flesh. Fresh, crisp, bold, sexy, smart, savvy and even – to quote Cadillac – audacious. We hate to swallow marketing pabulum of any sort, but in this situation, with this car, the descriptor "audacious" rings absolutely true. What other word could we use to explain the dramatic, emotional and complex combination of lines, angles and curves that make up this new Cadillac? "Brave" perhaps, but regardless of the adjective, the CTS Coupe is a shot across the design world's bow."

The CTS Coupe showed up the other day mising 2 inches in length, adding two inches to the rear and shaving two inches off the top. They called it the 3 two's. The windshield is pushed back making it sleeker and more aerodynamic. They pulled off the door handles and put then in the door itself. Very slick. The tail pipes are put together and centered in the rear.

Leiberman again:

"It all works fabulously; the Coupe is an aspirational shape, one that simultaneously signifies a suddenly reborn brand. Once again and for the first time in a while, we're talking world-class."

Once you climb inside you're escorted into the Cadillac class of luxury style and taste. Leiberman's not a big fan of the inside, but that's OK. He says it's remeniscent of Uncle Al's Caddy and again, that's OK because Uncle Al still shops here.

What's so great about this interior is that it, in my never to be humbled but slighty biased opinion is that is is applicable and appropriate for not only Uncle Al, but Uncle Al's kid, cousin Larry. That being said, the CTS Coupe can span a few generations and make waves with performance luxury buyers of all ages.

The bad new in all of this was that these ghost riders from Detroit had a CTS-V Coupe that all we were allowed to do was gawk and stare. Unfortunately for all parties present, a test drive was out of the question, but when fired up and purring and humming the engine sound was pure magic.

My buddy Leibeman drove it though...

"On the road, everything that's good about the four-door CTS is amplified in the coupe. You're lower to the road, the wider rear-track and sticky 19-inch summer tires provide gooey gobs of grip and the view out over the hood is definitely sporting. The only available Coupe engine is the more potent 304 horsepower, 274 pound-feet of torque 3.6-liter V6, as opposed to the sedan which can also be had with a less powerful 3.0-liter V6. Well, we shouldn't say "only available" as the full-mental patient 556-hp supercharged LSA motor will be available in the CTS-V Coupe when both models go on sale later this summer."

After the boys from Detroit pulled out to head over to another Cadillac dealership on their route I was left to wonder what kind of reception the CTS Coupe will recieve from the public. Uncle Al and Cousin Larry are going to like it, I know that; I just wonder how the rest are going to take to it? All in all the CTS Coupe is going to be a real nice addition to the Cadillac line and a for one am looking forward to having it on the lot.

Jonny summed it all up nice...

"At the end of the day, however, ride and handling, acceleration and even the interior aren't the point of the CTS Coupe. Style is, and in that regard Cadillac has grand-slammed it. Take a look at the competition. All of the previously mentioned Germans and Japanese two-doors simply can't hold a candle to the Coupe's glorious lines. The shape and the shape alone is what will attract buyers. And really, by taking the bold way out and "building the concept car," Cadillac has accomplished something we think is really, truly special. With the already gorgeous front end of the CTS coupled to the sculpted, athletic profile and sleek, groundbreaking rear, the Coupe is a powerful statement. Announcing that not only is GM on the road to recovery, but that Cadillac is once again ready to compete with the world's best."

Keyes Woodland Hills Lends A Hand (and a car) To LAPD

Last month Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac loaned a used car to the LAPD to use in local under cover operations as part of the Counter-Terrorism and Criminal Intelligence Bureau.

With times being tough all over and with city budget constraints, Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac has been happy to help the LAPD out.

Our Fleet and Inventory manager is Charlie Nicgorski. Charlie has been with GM for 12 years and has been a valuable asset to Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac.

Charlie is also an LAPD Firearms Instructor at the Police Academy and still goes out on Patrol when time allows. Charlie's had a long and distinguished career with the LAPD. He joined the force in 1983 and since then has received over 70 commendations and has been awarded several medals. Charlie has also been honored with "Officer of the Year" on more than one occasion and including one for the State in 1990. In addition to having worked with the Academy, Charlie is also a Drug Recognition Expert.

Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac received a nice thank you letter from LAPD courtesy of Charlie Beck and Steven Sambar earlier this month.

First initiated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week focuses on the many men and women of law enforcement that have given their lives in the line of duty. This year 324 names will be added to the memorial wall including 116 officers killed during 2009. Last year was one of the lowest years for officer deaths, but for those 116 families, the loss was catastrophic. To put it into easy to understand terms, before National Police Week is over another two officers (on the average) will be killed in the line of duty.

A candlelight vigil will take place at the Officer's Memorial in Washington D.C. on May 13 at 8pm. It is expected to draw over 20,000 to the ceremony. There will be many events taking place at both the city and state levels this week so be sure to keep our officers in mind and if nothing else, just give someone on the other side of that badge a big "howdy".

Keyes Woodland Hills Buick-GMC-Cadillac continues to salute our officers and support local enforcement. We have a family connection here at Keyes with both the LASD and LAPD. During the Police Challenge Cup/Baker to Vegas we are happy to provide chase cars to some of the police running teams. We also take part in the loaner car program which provides undercover vehicles to detectives for special assignments. Due to budget cuts these operations can't get access to the needed cars without the support of local businesses. We also are glad to provide flexibility to one of our very own managers that continues to serve part time for the police department. This allows him to contribute valuable services to our local community while still being an assest to the Keyes organization.

So What's this picture all a-boot?

For the last 20 years every April brings the Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay which was a project started by the LAPD's Revolver and Athletic Club.

It is a great way to raise money and it get bigger every year. Since it's inception 20 years ago over 100,000 officers have joined their respective department running teams and have taken part in this worthwhile event.

This year Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac store was able to provide three vehicles to help sponser several of both the LASD and LAPD teams. The LAPD was playing host to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Women's Team. Two members of the team were kind enough to pose next to one of our chase vehicles in their classic full dress Mountie attire. Go Mounties!

"GM is hoping the new Buick models will act as an automotive fountain of youth and attract more customers such as 48-year-old Frank Zuniga, a real estate broker from Hacienda Heights.

"When people think of Buick they think of the stereotype big boats, but they have really done some nice redesigns to compete with upper-end vehicles," said Zuniga, who recently spent about $40,000 on a fully equipped LaCrosse.

"I was close to getting the Lexus, but when I looked at what the LaCrosse was offering it was pretty attractive. I think it will be a hot seller for a while," Zuniga said.

The comparison to the Lexus is exactly what GM executives are gunning for. Much of their advertising pits the LaCrosse against the Lexus ES 350, the luxury brand's entry-level sedan.

That's one reason LaCrosse sale rose 336% in California to 528 vehicles in the first quarter while Lexus ES 350 sales have fallen 37% to 1,100, according to the California New Car Dealers Assn. Overall Buick sales in California have doubled from a year earlier.

Nationally, Buick sales surged more than 50% to 44,317 through the first four months of this year, a period when industry sales gained 16.7%, according to Autodata Corp. Buick also is outselling Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln luxury brand this year.

The brand expects to double its current level of sales over the next several years."

Is it just me or is there a shortage of vehicles this year? I notice it's been especially hard to find some of the most popular models GM makes. Even finding the full size SUV's like Yukons and Escalades has become challenging.

As the inventory manager here at Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac, I can tell you first hand that it's not you! After the major shake-up in the real estate, financial and automobile industries, things have changed dramatically. The good thing is that GM is now even more committed to building the most reliable cars in the industry while working to be financially viable in an ever-changing global business climate.

Because of this fact, GM has decided to get away from just over producing volumes of cars and then having to "push" them on the market with large rebates and offers that wind up putting the company in the red. This is how GM got into trouble in the first place. Instead, GM has moved towards providing vehicles that people want with pricing closer to the actual market value. Basically, what they will actually sell for.

Of course in theory this all sounds reasonable. However, I understand how it can be difficult for a consumer who is used to the days of row after row of the same car in varying colors and options to choose from with super heavy rebates of $10-15000. For the most part, those days are gone. We are in and will have to adapt to the "new" world of auto purchasing.


The good news is, business is picking up!

Cars that have been selling like crazy and are in limited supply are vehicles such as the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and the GMC Terrain. Production still hasn't been able to keep up with demand.

But what about the full size SUV? Are folks still driving those things? Actually they are. Even though many folks have been downsizing, some people still need the room and towing capabilities of a full size SUV. But GM has been building far fewer of these than in years past. Recently, GM gave us a one month allotment of only 2 Yukon XL's. That means for a store that normally sells 3 to 5 a month, we get 2. This includes any 3/4 ton, basic Yukon XL or even Denali XL models.

I understand how this can be difficult for any client to understand. Also, when you're used to seeing a sea of Yukons, how this could look like a "sales tactic" designed to create "urgency," but in reality, this situation is not unique to any one particular dealer or area, all GM dealers right now must contend with it.

So what can you, as a consumer, do? First off, you might want to consider flexibility. Perhaps have multiple colors choices in mind. Could you live with a different interior color? Perhaps there are options that can be added at the dealership level or maybe you can accept certain items that you thought you didn't want. Remember that even though most dealers are willing to do trades for you, the best deal will always be on finding a car that you can buy right from the dealer's inventory.

What if you cannot compromise on a single item and don't find what you want?

Then you may want to consider the option to order the car. This process usually takes 6-8 weeks, but you get the vehicle exactly the way that you want it. This year we have been special ordering cars in much larger numbers than in previous years.

The Trade In - What to do with your old car?

It's new car time again! You've selected the next car you'd like to own and now you've got to figure out what to do with the old car.

Do you sell privately or do you trade it in?

This can be stressful for some people, but I'm here to tell you, it doesn't have to be. Let's look at a couple scenarios and see if we can't figure out the best way to go next time you're looking to get rid of your old car and step into something newer.

Scenario #1: Terri has a 2009 Acura TSX with 31000 miles. She has 1 child and just found out she has another on the way and her husband just got a Golden Retriever for the family. Terri needs a bigger car. She is a commuter and is thinking that a mid-size SUV might be the right way to go. She's liked the technology and luxury that she has in her Acura but she really wants to buy American this time. She's most likely going to decide to buy a Buick Enclave. But what about the TSX?

Solution: Having a good idea what her TSX is actually worth is a great starting point. Many consumer driven websites will tell you to save the trade until the end. They will also advise you to keep the new car sale separate from the trade in. Keeping it separate is sound advice, especially if the trade in is paid off. But what if you still owe on your trade? Most likely, in this situation, Terri's going to have a loan balance and if that balance is greater than the actual value of the trade, she's going to have some negative equity to deal with too. And if that's the case, the dealer's going to need to be involved in that.

-Step one. Find out what the trade in is worth. Before going to the dealership, log on to Autotrader.com Here you'll find an excellent tool called: "Guaranteed Trade-In Offer" The Guaranteed Trade In offer is a new, easy way for the customer to get a free guaranteed offer for you to use as a starting point for the value of a trade in. Here at Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC and Cadillac, we've been using this tool to help in-market buyers get a fair assesment of what their trade in is really worth. Assuming the car matches what you put down when you arrive at the dealer, the number you get when you use this tool is the least amount of money you can expect for your trade. And that's a good thing because it's guaranteed by Autotrader.

-Step two. Compare the Value you get from AutoTrader with your payoff. Let's say in the case the value came back at $20,415 and the payoff is 25,200. Terri has $4785 worth of negative equity.

-Step three. How much can you put down? Do you have enough cash to buy yourself out of the current loan? If you do, then that is the best way to go. However, if you're like most people, you don't. Or you do, but you're not interested in dropping $5,000 into a new loan. So put down what you're comfortable with and move on.
     Yes, it's not the best way to do it.
     Yes, you'll wind up upside down in the new loan.
     Yes, you still need a bigger car and you also need to find a way to make it work. That's the reality.

-Step four. Negotiate your best deal on the new car. Settle on a fair price for the trade. Take a loan that is "simple interest" and pay that sucker off as quickly as you can. A simple interest loan has no prepayment penalty. So if you can pay more than your minimum due, do so and avoid additional interest charges.

But, what is, specifically, a good deal and a fair price? A good deal is a state of mind. A fair price is what you and the dealership agree on. Only you will know what that is.

Scenario #2: Billy's got a 1996 Ford Taurus Wagon with 185,000 miles on it. It's about to go. For Billy and the Taurus, it's time. Billy's not looking to get into another payment plan and has $15,000 saved up. For his next car he wants to pay cash and buy a clean used car. Does he trade it or sell it?

Solution: Both! Again, the AutoTrader tool can be invaluable. Find out what it's worth. Whatever number comes back, Billy should take a look at the number and see how he feels about it. If it make since to him, then he can trade it in and be done with it. If Billy wants to see if he can get a little more for it, a good idea then might be to invest a few bucks into getting it into selling condition and then either listing it on a site like AutoTrader.com or Craigslist and see what happens. If Billy doesn't have the time or interest in selling it privately, these type of trade ins make a great piece for a charitable contribution.

Scenario #3: Jim and Amy have a 2005 Toyota Highlander that they've used to take the kids to school, go to the store and go to Mammoth 2-3 times a year. The miles are average and consistent for it's age. They've decided to upgrade to a larger SUV and after Jim's promotion they're looking at a Yukon Denali because, like Terri, Jim and Amy really want to buy American. Amy is worried about not getting the full value for the Highlander at the dealer and wants to sell it privately but Jim doesn't feel comfortable playing car salesman.

Solution: Again, the AutoTrader Tool will come in quite handy since this value is guaranteed. Using the Autotrader will give them a real nice bench mark. If they are comfortable with the value, they can trade the Highlander knowing that the AutoTraderAutotrader will give them a real nice bench mark. If they are comfortable with the value, they can trade the Highlander knowing that the AutoTrader value is their "worst case scenario." Now if the value that comes back is still too low or it's enough but they want to see what they can get, that's when you put a for sale sign up and see what happens. Ideally if it doesn't happen for you in two weeks, should probably just trade it in. On a dealer level, we try not to keep a used car in inventory for more than 45 days. Used cars depreciate and the longer you spend trying to sell it, the less you're going to be able to sell it for. Believe me, we FULLY understand this. Selling a used car can quickly turn into a "just minimize the loss" situation. Why do that to yourself?

A note on researching value: There are a lot of places on the Internet to get pricing information about what you car is worth. Kelley Blue Book, The Black Book, NADA, and Edmunds are good tools for researching what your car may be worth. Keep in mind, that the values you see are to be used by you and the dealership as a guide. Local market conditions, current state of the economy, local inventories, current supply and demand of vehicles on the area, the brand image of the make and model and the price of tea in China can all have monumental effects on trade in value.

What does "trade in value" mean? When researching what you car is worth, you may see a term "trade in value." Aside from the obvious implied meaning, this is an estimated figure as to what you may be able to get for your trade in. A dealer however will incur additional costs before they can resell it. Namely, billable hours to the service department to inspect and prepare the vehicle for resale. In most dealerships, the Sales Department is also a client of the Service Department. Tires, Breaks, Smog and Safety, Bumper Touch Ups, Deodorizer, Fixing rips in the interior, windshield replacement, etc are all expenses that can effect what a dealer will offer you for your car. It's important to take that into consideration.

Getting a new car should be fun and exciting. If trying to sell your old car turns out to be more trouble than it's worth, it's really OK to just trade it in as long as you feel comfortable with the value you are offered. Hopefully this will help you down the road.

Keyes Woodland Hills GM: My Lease Is Up? Now What???

So, you're lease is coming to a close. You've made your last lease payment and haven't figured out what to do. This is normal. A lot of people wonder what kind of options there are. If you're thinking about leasing your next car, this will be helpfull to you as well. One of the common myths about leasing is that you're renting the car. You're not and we're going to show you why.

When your lease is up, you have three options:

1. Buy it.

2. Sell it or trade it.

3. Turn it in and start fresh.

Let's take a look at each option in a little more detail.

Option 1: Buy it.

Leasing is really just another way of financing. When you lease a car, the bank handling the lease will assign a residual value to the lease. The residual value is what the car will be worth at the end of the lease and it is a percentage of the MSRP. For example, let's say you're going to lease a car that has an MSRP of 30,000 and the residual is 50%. That means at the end, the bank believes the car will be worth 50% of it's original value or 15,000. If you've enjoyed having this car and want to keep it, you can then buy it from the bank for this set residual value. You have the option of paying cash or you can finance it. It's up to you.

Option 2: Sell It/Trade It.

Folks, this is your car. You own it and you're responsible for it just like a traditional car loan. When you finance it, who holds the title until you're done paying it off? The bank, right? Same thing here. When you're leasing it, you have the option to sell it or trade it at anytime. The question is, as you approach the end of your lease, should you?

First, you want to find out what your car is really worth right now. The best tool for that currently is on AutoTrader.com. They have a tool that will provide you with a Guaranteed Trade In Offer.

Once you know what your car is worth, compare that number to the residual value. Remember in our example, the residual was 50% or 15000. If your car is worth 17000, you have 2000 in equity that you can apply to your next deal by trading it in or you can sell it privately and pocket the money.

But what if the value is less than the residual? Well that leads to option # 3 or if you've already decided to buy it, who cares what it's worth? It's your car and you love it! Just continue to enjoy it.

Option 3: Turn it in and start fresh.

Believe it or not there are alot of people who like to get a new car every 2-4 years. If you're like that, if you don't drive a lot of miles (15000 or less), and you, like me, have resigned yourself to having a car payment for life, then leasing is the best way to go for you.

My personal experience with the Enclave: Before selling Buick I worked for another luxury brand and every now and then when following up with customers I would here, "Sorry, but we went with the Enclave."
