My husband and I are not typical buyers. When we buy a high ticket item like a car, you can bet your sweet bippy that we are going to research it, even if it takes 6 months. Everyone should do their research because that is how they get in the wrong car or are taken advantage of. I am not saying every salesman will do that, but they are out there and believe me, I have met them.
First of all, we read all about what we think we want. In fact, my husband's favorite toilet reads are Motor Trend, Car and Driver, and Consumer Reports. We know from past experience if the maker has had problems with that model in that particular year to stay away. I know that not a lot of dealers will tell you that stuff.
We also will search all over Southern California for who has the best price and compare apples with apples. Even if it is far but the best price, then that is the car for us. Our last two cars have been price leaders but were still loaded with upgrades even though we had to drive an hour and a half for it. Some dealers closer will match the deal to get your business and some will laugh at you, but hey, it's our money right? The deals are out there if you do your homework. Anywho, I think we are a salesman's nightmare because we are not easily sold and, after all of our research, we have tunnel-vision for what we want.
I am not saying this is for everyone, but in this time of recession, we have to make out money work for us and not the other way around. Sure it's time consuming and often a hassle but we drive two late modeled cars completely paid off because of our savvy.
I was never like this before my husband, but he is smart when it comes to money and I value his financial aptitude. On the other hand, he likes to research everything down to our new toaster. Now that can get annoying...
